Robust spatial planning has a crucial part to play in minimising the risk of climate change, however current frameworks are poorly developed and are unable to deal adequately with this risk. ESPACE aims to tackle this problem by ensuring that adaptation strategies are incorporated into spatial planning systems.
ESPACE will also focus on a major issue at the core of adaptation – a lack of awareness and understanding of climate change. ESPACE will raise awareness amongst a wide range of stakeholders including policy makers, practitioners and members of the community to ensure that climate change is acknowledged as a major influence on spatial planning
processes.
Climate change is a global issue, transcending political boundaries. To address this, ESPACE has been founded by a transnational group of 10 Partners, also known as the ‘ESPACE Partnership’ spanning four North West European countries and bringing together representatives from all levels of civic society. Organisations from other European Member States are also invited to participate through an ‘Extended Partnership'.
| Project Objectives |
 |
- To develop a dynamic transnational approach to adaptation to climate change within spatial planning mechanisms which can be implemented by the Partners;
- To recommend a suitable approach at European, national, regional and local levels;
|
Over the next four years, a number of key actions will be undertaken by the ESPACE Partnership to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
